KothuthuRoti™ - The Tamil Crown Dish Now Recognised by
the Oxford English Dictionary

In June 2025, the Oxford English Dictionary officially recognised kothu roti as a world dish - joining the same Tamil culinary lineage that introduced the word kari (curry) to Europe in the 16th century.

But long before Oxford documented it, Tamil cooks in Ceylon created KothuthuRoti™

as a night-market specialty during the Crown Colony era.

FAQ

1. Is this Indian or Sri Lankan food?

No.
India and Sri Lanka, as we know them today, are British colonial creations less than 200 years old.

These dishes come from the Tamil Crown Curry tradition, developed in one of the two traditional Tamil habitats — shaped through Portuguese, Danish, Dutch, French, Javanese, and British Crown influence, long before modern national borders existed.

2. What is LumpRice™?

LumpRice™ is a Tamil–Dutch Crown dish, slow-cooked, banana-leaf wrapped, layered with rice, sambal, cutlets, frikkadels, and roast curry.

It is not biryani and not known to Company Curry traders.

3. Why is LumpRice™ more expensive?

Because each portion:

  • takes 6+ hours to prepare

  • is wrapped in banana leaves

  • uses premium ingredients

  • is hand-layered

  • is cooked in small batches only

It is a heritage luxury dish — not mass-produced food.

4. What is KothuthuRoti™?

It is the original Tamil version of Kothu Roti —
the one recognised by the Oxford English Dictionary (June 2025).

Hand-shredded roti, chopped with sambals, eggs or meat, and roast gravy in the traditional Tamil method.

5. What is Watilla™?

Watilla™ is your premium version of Wattalappam, a Tamil coconut custard dessert with Dutch and Malay influence.

It is also part of the Oxford English Dictionary (June 2025) additions.
